As we continue our New Testament reading series we venture into the book of Hebrews. If Hebrews would convince you of one thing it is to live into the new covenantal relationship we have because of Jesus. The book of Hebrews addresses issues of first century Jewish Christians who matured under the law and the prophets and the sacrificial system of the temple priests. But now, something better has come along.

Yet, it is often easier to hold on to the familiar than to accept change; even when that change is better! We have a better High Priest and a better sacrifice in Jesus. Through the atonement brought about by Jesus we have a better covenant. The New Testament scholar, N.T. Wright, likens our situation to a child opening a present on Christmas Day and the child only focuses on the wrapping paper, while ignoring the gift inside. The Old Testament with it laws and its systems were wrapping paper for the gift of the New Covenant in Jesus. Hear more this Sunday as we enter a new sermon series: Letters. We are going to explore two New Testament letters in the coming month. They stand out in both their theology and their notoriety: Hebrews and James. I hope you will join us!
